How Does Sexual Functioning Change As We Age?

November 24, 2008 | Category:Sexual Health | Author: viagra online

Aging leads to changes in bodily appearance and organ functioning, lower levels of pituitary hormones, and a higher incidence of illness, injury, disease and chronic pain involving multiple prescriptions for pharmaceutical medications. These bodily changes, along with emotionally stressful life events, e.g., retirement, empty nest, loss of partner, or caring for elderly parents, may adversely affect sexual functioning. Women

As women enter menopause, no longer ovulate, and their estrogen, progesterone and testosterone levels drop, many experience decreased desire for and arousal during sexual activity combined with less powerful orgasms or even inability to attain orgasm(by Female Viagra). Physiologic changes may include:

  • decreased lubrication leading to vaginal dryness and pain
  • atrophy or expansion of vaginal tissues
  • decreased elevation of the uterus
  • reduced muscle tension with few orgasmic contractions
  • rapid decrease in arousal after orgasm
  • reduced spread of sex flush
  • decreased sexual desire and arousal

Men

As males age, decreased testosterone and testicular function, lowered sperm count, enlarged prostate, and reduced muscle tension often cause men to require greater stimulation to become aroused, have less frequent and more easily diminished arousal, decreased sensation, less powerful orgasms, and becoming tired or exhausted for some time after orgasm and ejaculation. Physiologic changes include:

  • delayed and less firm penile and nipple erection
  • longer excitement phase and longer interval until ejaculation
  • decreased pre ejaulatory emissions
  • diminished lifting of scrotum and testes
  • more rapid return to pre arousal state
  • shorter ejaculation time with reduced volume and fewer contractions
  • shortened phase of impending orgasm and expulsion of semen
  • more rapid loss of erection and longer refractory period

How Can Sexual Functioning and Enjoyment Continue Throughout Life?

As we age, there are some gradual declines in the response rate and reactions of many of our bodily organs and tissues. However, our bodies continue to respond to stimulation as long as we are breathing, our brain is functioning normally, and our heart is pumping. Viagra Professional.
Having a sexual problem is not unlike having any other type of physical or emotional problem. There is a cause, either physiological, psychological, or a combination of both.

Recommendations for Treatment to Overcome Sexual Problem

  • Make an appointment with the appropriate medical doctor to have an evaluation of your physiology: hormone levels, blood vessels, blood flow, acute or chronic infections or other diseases. Depending on your gender and what the specific problem is, you may choose to see a gynecologist, urologist, endocrinologist, internist, gastroenterologist, oncologist, etc.
  • Make an appointment with the appropriate psychotherapist (preferably someone who is also certified to provide sexual counseling or sex therapy) for evaluation of your psychological, emotional, mental and spiritual state. Depending on what you believe is the primary issue (your relationship, your family situation, your own self image or sexual concerns, your own religious or spiritual conflicts), you may choose to see a Marriage and Family Therapist, a Mental Health Counselor or Professional Counselor, a Social Worker, or a Psychologist.
  • If your mental and emotional concerns are severely interfering with your ability to function in your everyday life, you probably should consult with a psychiatrist who can evaluate you and provide appropriate medications to alleviate your overwhelming symptoms. Then, you may be better able to gain insight and the capability of overcoming your problems if you also work with a psychotherapist. Canadian Viagra.
  • If you are courageous and really want to overcome a long term physical problem (such as a woman having vaginal pain or vaginnismus), you may choose to see a physical therapist who is trained to work with pelvic floor dysfunctions.
  • Work with a body therapist, someone who is trained to alleviate neuromuscular tensions and other body dysfunctions. You may be surprised how many physical problems in distant parts of your body are related to your current sexual problem.

Study Forecasts Sexual Health Crisis

Researchers from Liverpool John Moores University have warned that Europe’s binge drinking and drug culture among young people could potentially cause a sexual health crisis.

About Viagra Super Active

The researchers came to this conclusion after undertaking a study, which revealed that many young people are drinking alcohol in order to boost their chances of having sex and a smaller number are also buying Viagra Super Active to enhance their sexual pleasure. The researchers found that this behaviour significantly increased the chances of people undertaking unsafe sex or having multiple partners.

The study questioned 1,341 people aged 16 to 35 and found that a third of men and a quarter of women drank alcohol to increase their chances of having sex.

Indeed, the study found that over a quarter (26%) of cocaine users used it to prolong sex. People who regularly took cocaine were also over five times more likely to have had five or more sexual partners in the last 12 months, or to have used prostitutes/paid for sex. In addition to these findings, more than one in seven regular ecstasy users said they had recently exchanged sex for drugs.

The study also found that young people who had used alcohol, cannabis, cocaine or ecstasy prior to the age of 16 were more likely to have had underage sex. Indeed, the study suggested that boys using cannabis before the age 16 were almost three times more likely to have had underage sex than those who had not, while girls were 6.4 times more likely. In addition to this, boys who drank under the age of 16 were 2.47 times more likely to have had underage sex and girls were 5.7 times more likely.

Mark Bellis, of the University’s Centre for Public Health, led the study. He explained that the findings indicated drinking and drugs were becoming “routine”, he said: “Trends in recent decades have resulted in recreational drug use and binge drinking becoming routine features of European nightlife.” He also added that the study suggested drug and alcohol use often led young people to make sexual decisions that they may later regret. He said: “Millions of young Europeans now take drugs and drink in ways which alter their sexual decisions and increase their chances of unsafe sex or sex that is later regretted.

The cities included in the study were Liverpool in the UK, Vienna in Austria, Lisbon in Portugal, Brno in the Czech Republic, Berlin in Germany, Athens in Greece, Venice in Italy, Ljubljana in Slovenia, and Palma in Spain.

Information on Sexual Health

Sexuality is a big part of being human. Love, affection and sexual intimacy all play a role in healthy relationships. They also contribute to your sense of well-being. A number of disorders can affect the ability to have or enjoy sex, including erectile dysfunction and female sexual problems. Concerns about infertility or fear of unplanned pregnancy can also come into play.

Sexual disorders can sometimes be prevented from occurring in the first place. Parents who communicate openly and honestly with children about sexual issues may help prevent them from developing anxiety and guilt that may later lead to sexual disorders. Open communication between sexual partners is also helpful. People who have experienced abuse or other sexual violence may develop a sexual disorder as a result of their trauma.

As part of our comprehensive strategy to improve the sexual health of the population, the Department of Health UK is working to reduce the prevalence of sexually transmitted infections and HIV, reduce unintended pregnancies (particularly teenage pregnancies) and improve the range, access to and quality of service provision. On these pages you will find more information and guidance on sexual health including contraception, abortion and STIs and HIV.

Millions upon millions of men around the world are dissatisfied with some aspect of their male sexual health. Some are discontent with the size of their penis while others are disappointed with the low volume of semen they ejaculate during intercourse and yet there are others who are disappointed with sub par erections and lack of male libido. Not to worry! Our site is specifically designed to help men explore the various male enhancement options available for improving male sexual health.

Societal attitudes toward sexuality in later life are troubling. A great number believe that far fewer mature men and women have sex than actually do. Many feel that after a certain age, sexuality becomes an insignificant or indifferent part of life. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Most older people experience some interest in sexual intimacy. Many people are sexually intimate well into their 80s and beyond. We do not all of a sudden become asexual beings; our capacity for sexual intimacy will be with us our entire lives.

Penile erection is sustained by holding back and trapping the blood in the penis. The enlarged penis compresses the blood vessels that drain the blood out of penis to the tunica albuginea. But when an enzyme called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) becomes active, the cGMP level falls, followed by corpora cavernosa muscle contraction. As a result the blood in-flow is stopped and the veins drain the blood out of the penis and the erection goes away.

Contraception: Improving access to contraceptive services and to the full range of methods is one of the key aims of the Government’s White Paper - Choosing Health: making healthy choices easier. This section contains documents and guidance on contraception policy.

As we all approach later life, two of the things which brought us the greatest joy - our children and/or our careers - are no longer as prevalent in our every day. This means that our personal relationships take on an increased importance. It is a way of solidifying our relationship with our partner and taking refuge from the sometimes harsh reality of the world. Sex is a way to affirm the love of life. It is an expression of the satisfaction gained from the present. It expresses the closeness of our deepest relationships and is an important measure of the quality of life.
